The place Wilson, is at the eastern entrance of the city centre of Toulouse. It leads off from the Allées Jean Jaurès linking the heart of the city with the Canal du Midi. Building of the Place Wilson as we now know it began in 1806 but was not completed until 1830. It is a small round garden with streets radiating from the centre where, a sculpture and fountain were built in honour of the poet Goudouli.
The Place is a hub of nighttime activity with cafés and cinemas. You cannot fail to stumble across the Victor Hugo market, a delight for the senses. There, in the covered market, you will find some of the most wonderful produce from all of France. On the first floor, numerous restaurants offer country produce. Around this market, many shops have proliferated offering cheeses, wines, coffee , fine groceries, poultry and flowers.
A stone’s throw away, the Capitole denotes the epicentre of this ‘the pink’ city. Here you will find the Toulouse City Hall and Capitole theatre. This expansive square is brought to life by morning markets and the busy hustle and bustle of the many cafes around the edge - boasting amongst them most well known in the city ( le Bibent, le Grand Cafe de l’Opera, le Florida and Mon Caf’ ). In the surrounding area you will find picturesques old city streets which clearly depict the rich and varied past of this ancient quarter.
